Why retreat?

Life is busy! Jesus invited us all to come to him in Matthew 11:28  "Come to me all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

In choosing to come on retreat, you are acknowledging your need for some uninterrupted God time.  It will be a time of rest, refreshment, life-giving water and reflection. You will leave equipped with His perspective and instruction for the Road ahead. The Haven will provide you with a quiet, safe, comfortable setting to settle in. Spiritual direction is available by appointment to help you detect the movement of God and to recognize your response to Him.

You may come with your own retreat plan or one authored for you by your personal spiritual director.

What would I do on retreat?

The answer to this question is unique to you and your present season of life. A good place to start is to consider why you are interested in a retreat. You might just need the rest, or a place to de-stress, or find solitude to focus on a major life decision, or need to seek God’s counsel to re-center yourself.

Some practical examples of common retreat practices and disciplines include:

  • Simply enjoy a respite of peace and tranquility by separating yourself from daily life in a tranquil environment. “Sometimes the most godly thing we can do . . . is take a nap.” John Ortberg
  • Seek to be in God’s presence in ways you best experience God: meditating on scripture, simply sitting his presence, praying, journaling, reading, studying scripture, doing creative work with your hands (sketching, coloring, water colors, molding clay, etc.), journaling, singing, dancing.
  • Work from a prepared retreat outline. We have a retreat outline library in this website that you may find helpful. You may have a counselor or spiritual director who will supply you with an outline which might center you on: care of your soul, seeking His guidance in an important decision, achieving more intimacy with your spouse, etc.
  • Collaborate with our spiritual director. Create a retreat outline in advance and/or a debriefing session following your retreat.
